Open Auto Transport
Open vehicle transport is without question the most common method of vehicle shipping. The trucks that haul
autos come in all shapes and sizes. There are several different types, including; 9&10 car carriers with a lower and upper
deck, 4&5 car mini trailers with upper and lower decks, and finally 2&3 car haulers with only one deck. If you happen to be
hauling a large van or truck, it may be that your auto has to go on a flatbed trailer with no upper deck. This is because
the height of your auto is simply prohibitive for a trailer that uses an upper deck, as their simply is not enough clearance.
As the consumer, you are completely free to request a particular type of trailer if you feel that one is superior to another. In
our opinion, all types of trailers if properly maintained and used according to their original purpose, are adequate for hauling
your auto. However if you feel you need more protection that can be afforded by say a flatbed or a single deck trailer, than you
have the option of selecting an enclosed trailer. Although more expensive by around 30% , an enclosed trailer offers maximum all
around protection of your auto.
Things to think of when selecting a type of carrier to haul your auto.
- Rock Chips - Although uncommon, rock chips are known to occure on open transport trucks.
- Clearance of the vehicle - Low vehicles often require enclosed transporters who have the necessary equipment to load the vehicle.
- Height and Width of the vehicle - A tall and long vehicle will take up more room on a transport trailer, and will possibly require a 2-3 car flatdeck type of trailer. Because the transporter can only fit 3 vehicles on this type of trailer, typically the cost will be higher. However, it may be the only option.
- Value of the auto - It is recommended to use an enclosed service if the vehicle is of high value. Enclosed trailers keep your auto completley encapsulated and offer the maximum amount of protection from all of the elements of the weather, while also offering additional protection from theft, criminal activity, or vandalism.

Price - If price is of importance to you, an open hauler will certainly save you $.
